St. Patrick's Day

I realize I am about 2 weeks late in posting this and I apologize!! This year St. Patty's Day fell on a Saturday. I wasn't going to be at school that Friday before so we celebrated that Thursday.

As a special surprise, we ate breakfast together that morning -- Lucky Charms, of course! Yum!!

We talked about how we each have things in our lives that make us feel lucky. So each student made a 4 leaf clover and wrote/illustrated 4 things that they feel make them lucky! These are just a few.. the rest are hanging up in our classroom!

And as a final treat, I gave each student a pot of gold (Rolos!)

2nd Grade Performance

These kids did such an outstanding job at their performance! I had heard bits and pieces of the show during the practices, but hadn't seen the entire thing until that night. I was extremely impressed!! I was able to get a few pictures backstage.

Luke got a chance to conduct in one of the songs. I wish I could have gotten a picture of his face, but he moved so quickly! He took the job very seriousy and the instruments sounded wonderful.

Dr. Seuss - Horton Hears A Who

We learned how Dr. Seuss liked to put a theme in his story. Authors do not come out and tell the reader what the theme is -- the reader has to be able to figure it out on their own. After discussing character traits of the main character, Horton, we thought about the theme of the story. We decided that Dr. Seuss was trying to teach us that everyone should be treated fairly and with respect, no matter what size, color, or shape they may be. We all agreed this was a very important theme so we made a small reminder to keep with us.

Dr. Seuss - The Lorax

Another Dr. Seuss book we was The Lorax. I invited the class to go see the movie with me the weekend before we read the book. It was interesting to compare the movie to the book. Some of the kids couldn't understand why they would change the book to make the movie, but we enjoyed both. After reading the story, we reviewed cause and effect and created a chain of events. We talked about how one event would lead to another. We also discussed what we thought the future was going to be like in the Land of the Truffula Trees. Finally, we made our own (edible) versions.

Dr. Seuss' Birthday

March 2nd was Dr. Seuss' birthday... and it fell right in the middle of our author study! We loved celebrating his birthday. We all made hats...

And ate some yummy blue popcorn with red fish! I didn't get a chance to take pictures while eating, but this is what it looked like.
